20261001 Sept Hobby Wrapup
on two hands#
Another month, another some amount of rats. There’s really no way to know, even with computers.
With the first month of a friendly local gaming store escalation league underway/now under our collective belts, I spent that first month trying to work ahead and get the models painted that I needed for month 2 - there’s additional league standing points for having a fully painted army and got-damn I wasn’t going to paint the Stormvermin that was part of the first month’s Spearhead army.
bombars away#
It all started with the Warlock Bombardier that barely got pushed back into September. Finished on September 1st, I tried to do some freehand hazard-block design on the rocket tip, but it got a little muddled. Regardless, it’s a fun model that I enjoyed painting. I also opted to descide that the burgundy color used here is going to be my hero color going forward.

count to three, no more no less#
Next up were two Globradiers (these things have changed names multiple times over editions, first Skryre Accolyltes, now Globradiers). I had purchased these 3d prints from Etsy years ago, before the 4th edition Skaven refresh brought us new plastic Globbers. I loved the old metal ones, but at ~$35 a pop for a single model, I never had the chance to buy them. And since I’m not buying models this year, I’m stuck using these Etsy models. As I’ve been painting, I found I don’t really care for these casts - the sizing feels off, and one of them has two left hands (and the tails are weird, I can’t tell if they’re supposed to be wearing something on their tails or not). But here we are, making the best of what we have:

On this first test model I was really making it up as I went - I used the same Dark Reaper I’ve been using across the army, but wanted something a little more “deadly gas” colored instead of the Waaagh Flesh for the green. I ended up with Orruk Flesh, which after the Agrax wash looks a little more on the sickly side. I was worried it’d go too far into the Nurgle/Pestelince realm, but seems to fit well enough. (I did had the thought of doing a hazmat blaze orange jumpsuit, but maybe that’ll be for a second unit.)

That was followed up by two more in the unit (out of the total of 5). As much as I have issues with parts of the models, I do love their little masks and backpacks.
remember battlenet clans?#
Three more Clanrats checked off the list: a standard bearer, a musician, and a little guy. The standard bearer was one I had started previously - the flag itself was already done and freehanded, but I had to finish the Skaven and base it. All three were models that for some reason had snapped off their bases previously. It’s a mystery.

walls, bricks, etc#
I also painted another set of Spearhead, but turns out I didn’t take any photos of them. Just look at the other ones and imagine them painted a little worse.
count ’em#
That brings us to the numbers: 11 total items painted, all either Fantasy or terrain.

The Warlock Bombardier really pushing up the Fantasy numbers this time around. And with the 6 other Fantasy models, finally captapults Fantasy into the lead, both in number of models and retail cost (the Bombardier itself making up the difference between Fantasy and Blood Bowl).

Month over month, September finally reaches the heights of 11 painted models that we started the year with, though not quite the heighest retail values. All infantry will do that to you.

Retail value staying above $100 for the month really rockets the trendline upwards over last month, though we’ll see if next month can keep above $100.

Number of models-wise, those 7 fantasy models dramatically shoots past Blood Bowl here - while I do still have more Blood Bowl to paint, the ongoing escalation league probably means Fantasy will be a runway for the rest of the year.

More numbers.

The carry forward continues to include our good friends Devilfish and Commander, who may never get finished at this rate. I have put paint on the remaining Globradiers in an attempt to finish out that unit - once they’re done, I’ll need to work on 3x Rattling Gunners, and then I should be fully battle ready for month two (1000 point army). And there’s always more clan rats to paint.

what’s your hobby?#
What’s this? A new segment? That’s right, we’re going to look at the scores and see how bad I am at these games we play.
Ultimately, both games were pretty close, with my Skaven taking an early lead in part thanks to the movement shennanigans. By turns 3/4 though, the squishy Skaven bodies just couldn’t hold the objectives they needed to and started to slip behind on points.

I did find in this first game I hate the diagonal layout. Having to be 6 inches from the line means there’s just no good locations to place units, especially when they come back from the dead.

In game 2, I had gotten tabled at the top of turn 4, so nothing points-wise for me in that final round. Though in retrospect, I suppose that means my “hanging in there”, two point game is just slightly more impressive. Whatever makes me sleep better at night. I did also double turn, in the hopes of wiping out the opposing general for another Battle Tactic (and did cut me out of drawing any other Battle Tactics), but turns out clan rats can’t hit worth shit (and my Grey Seer is flimsy as hell, I still don’t know exactly what I’m supposed to do with him).
But let’s be honest - I’m not here to win. I’m here to make the friends we found along the way.
Speaking of not winning Blood Bowl, we’re gearing up to start Season 3 soon (return of the Gators!), so more on that to come.
